KEES and MIEN is an intimate, humorous and observing documentary about the relationship of the grandparents of documentary filmmaker Ton van Zantvoort.
Is it true love or have they been fused over the past 67 years? Although KEES en MIEN try to stay healthy both mentally and physically, alienation of the rapidly changing world is unavoidable.
From the director
The last few years I have made quite some films abroad. People asked me when I would make a film more close to home. In this film I stay closer to home…. much closer.
My life is getting busier every year. I have less and less time for example to visit my grandparents. When my other grandmother died, I didn’t have time for it. ” It wasn’t sceduled in.” Years later I still thought about it a lot. What would I have wanted to have ask her? Now I still have one grandmother and one grandfather, but I still don’t make much spare time to visit them…
My grandparents are special. Not only for me as their grandson, but in many ways. In a globalizing and digitizing world, people are getting more and more individual. Also relationships change and are not long lasting. People meet eachother on the other side of the world or even on the world wide web. My grandparents are the last of their kind. They have spend already 67 years of their life together. But what is keeping them together and what if one them would die or would get demented?

Biography
Ton van Zantvoort was born in a small village in the southern Netherlands in 1979. After the design education he graduated in 2003 with credits at the Akademie St. Joost in Breda. In 2005 he was in South America for 5 months to make a triptych of films. GRITO de PIEDRA the longest of the three, had its world premiere on IDFA 2006. In that same year he was also nominated for the NFTVM award: the award for best new Dutch filmmaker. In 2009 his second long film a BLOOMING BUSINESS in coproduction with the VPRO screened on more than 40 important international film festivals and won many awards such as the Dok Leipzig HWF Award.
In this film he stays closer to home. Much closer as he makes an intimate portrait about his grandparents.
