The 22-minute film FANFARE portrays the story behind the eponymous artwork by Aukje Dekker, in which 12 musicians and 12 singers from different provinces come together without direction or rehearsal for a unique performance at the Binnenhof. The film is part of a series produced by NEWTON film, commissioned by the Atelier Chief Government Architect. It is part of the art program ‘Kunstparade Binnenhof Renovatie,’ where renowned artists create new temporary works during the renovation of the Binnenhof. Each film has a unique approach tailored to the specific artwork, the artist’s vision, and the collaborations involved.

Art Parade Binnenhof Renovation
The Art Parade Binnenhof Renovation program is a public initiative around the Binnenhof. Invited by the Rijksbouwmeester’s office, the Senate, the House of Representatives, the Council of State, the Ministry of General Affairs, and the Municipality of The Hague, various artists are commissioned to create new works during the years of the Binnenhof renovation. FANFARE was created at the invitation of the House of Representatives, which chose the theme ‘connecting and bridging’ for this edition.
The Documentary
NEWTON film produces a short film for each art manifestation, showcasing its background, creation, and performance. Each film in this series receives a unique approach tailored to the specific artwork, the artist’s vision, and the associated collaborations. The goal is to clearly convey the artist’s vision and to capture the creative process and execution in a visually powerful and engaging manner, allowing viewers to fully experience the essence of the work. We collaborate with various (emerging) filmmakers for these projects.
FANFARE by Aukje Dekker
Aukje Dekker (1983) is a versatile artist known for her boundless energy. Her work explores themes of collectivity and authenticity and their interrelationship, often with humor and self-irony. In FANFARE, she brings together 12 musicians and 12 singers from different provinces and musical backgrounds, such as brass bands, wind orchestras, and gospel choirs. Without direction, rehearsal, or a pre-determined piece of music, these 24 individuals meet for the first time on the Schelpenpad of the Lange Vijverberg in The Hague. Dressed in specially designed costumes, they deliver a unique performance centered on the theme of ‘connection’.
In FANFARE, the focus is on the attempt. It’s about finding connection in music and song, knowing when to pause or go along with another’s lead. It offers a sometimes awkward yet thrilling experience, inviting the audience to open themselves up to this search for coherence.
The theme of ‘connecting and bridging’ closely aligns with the function of the House of Representatives, where various societal perspectives come together in pursuit of consensus. FANFARE is a creative interpretation of this theme, where participants, like in the political process, attempt to find cohesion without a predetermined direction. The result is an artwork that is both musically and visually disarming and vulnerable.
